Meet the Team

Red Shed runs on people who care about the water, the work and the community around it. Meet the team leading rowing, the gym, recovery and the everyday life of the shed, and the committee that guides it.

Rowing

Meet the coaches below, and read more about how we coach.

Nick Galea
Nick Galea
Director of Rowing

Nick joined Red Shed in November 2025 from Glebe Rowing Club in Sydney, where he built a thriving youth and masters program. He has developed state champions, coached youth rowers who went on to national representation, and masters rowers who have won medals at international competition. Nick believes in the inclusion of all ages and abilities in rowing.

Sarah Peterswald
Sarah Peterswald
Rowing Operations Manager

Sarah is a full-time rowing coach at Red Shed and sits on the coaching team for the ACT Interstate senior team and the youth pathways program. A Canberra native, she rowed and coached at Canberra Grammar before coaching in Northern Ireland and Oxford. She also holds a double degree in Design and Commerce from ANU.

Charlotte McCarthy
Rowing and Fitness Coach

Charlotte is a full-time rowing coach and gym trainer at Red Shed, combining years of practical rowing experience with a Bachelor of Exercise Science to support athlete development. She coaches our Junior Red Shed Scholarship athletes, who recently medalled at the NSW State Championships and are preparing for Nationals.

Lyall McCarthy OAM
Rowing Coach

Lyall coached Kim Brennan to Olympic gold in the single scull at Rio 2016, one of four Olympic medals he has coached across three Games, alongside multiple world championship titles. Appointed Australia’s head women’s rowing coach at the AIS in Canberra in 1997 and later Rowing Australia’s Pathways Head Coach, he received an OAM for service to rowing in 2018. At Red Shed he takes private sessions on request, coaches across selected programs, and mentors our coaching team rather than running a regular squad.

Angus Reid
Coach and Lead Volunteer

Gus started rowing at Canberra Grammar in 1973 and rowed with the clubs that became Black Mountain Rowing Club. Fifty years on he is still on the water, still coaching, and a strong advocate for rowing for all and for Red Shed’s holistic approach to wellness. He also serves as Secretary on the Red Shed committee.
