FAQs

Memberships

What is a Red Shedder membership?

One membership for the whole shed. Your tier gives you a weekly allowance of sessions to use across rowing, the gym and recovery, in any mix. Tiers are Copper $35, Bronze $55, Silver $69, Gold $99 and Platinum $119 per week, with a 12-week minimum term. For recovery only, there is a dedicated Recovery membership at $45 per week.

Every tier includes free Red Shed Resets, towel service and a Red Shedder T-shirt each year. If you hold a weekly membership, you are a Red Shedder.

Can I change my membership tier?

You can upgrade at any time. Email info@redshed.org.au and we will sort it. You can also downgrade, and any applicable notice period will apply, see our Terms & Conditions.

How long am I locked in for?

Your membership has a 12-week minimum term to begin with. After that it rolls on, with 4 weeks’ notice to cancel. So if you cancel in your first week you’ll see out the 12 weeks, and if you cancel in week 14 you only need to give 4 weeks.

Can I pause my membership?

Yes, and there’s no fee. Pauses are a minimum of two weeks.

How long can I pause for?

Two weeks at a minimum, and up to eight weeks per calendar year.

How do I pause?

Email info@redshed.org.au with the dates you want. Two things to know:

  • Pauses are a minimum of two weeks. We can’t pause for a single week.
  • We need your request in writing before your next payment is drawn. Memberships are billed weekly, so if your request arrives after that week’s payment has gone through, the pause starts from the following week. The more notice you can give us the better.
Can I use the facility while I’m paused?

No. While your membership is paused you’re not being charged, so sessions, Red Shed Resets and Open Gym are all on hold. Any bookings inside the pause window will be cancelled, and because the door only opens for booked sessions, your fob won’t let you in until your membership restarts. Hang onto it, you’ll need it when you come back.

Does my membership start again automatically?

Yes. It picks up on the date your pause ends, on your usual billing day, at the same tier and the same rate. You don’t need to do anything.

Does pausing cancel my membership?

No. A pause isn’t notice of cancellation, your membership stays in place and restarts when the pause ends. If you want to cancel, email us separately and the notice period in our Terms & Conditions applies.

Can I pause Friends of Red Shed or a permanent locker?

No. Those are annual and quarterly agreements and they keep running through a membership pause.

Can I get a membership refund?

Refunds and cancellations follow our published terms and conditions. See Terms & Conditions or ask us at info@redshed.org.au.

What’s included

When does my weekly allowance reset?

Your week currently runs from the day you joined rather than Monday to Sunday, which can make it hard to keep track of. If a Monday reset would be easier, email info@redshed.org.au and we’ll switch you over.

Are Red Shed Resets included in my membership?

Yes, Resets are free for every Red Shedder and they don’t use one of your weekly sessions. They run Mondays at 5:30pm in the Telopea Room, rotating through things like Pilates, yoga, breathwork, sound meditation, Qi Gong and stretching, so check the timetable for what’s on.

Resets are as much about meeting people as the session itself, so bring your family and friends, guests can book casually in the app for $25. Resets don’t run on public holidays.

Is Open Gym included in my membership?

Open Gym and unlimited Recovery Hub are included on Gold and Platinum. On Silver or below you can still use them, it just takes one of your sessions. Open Gym times are in the app and on the timetable.

Do erg sessions use one of my sessions?

Yes, ergs use a session. They are run by our rowing team and suit anyone, whether you row, train at RSX Strength Club or are new to both. Ergs help your technique, build general fitness, and are a good starting point if you are new.

Is towel service included?

Towel service is included for our Red Shedder members, Friends of Red Shed and corporate crews. Towels are also available inside the recovery space for hygiene if you’re visiting casually. One towel per visit, please.

Towel service isn’t part of our rowing programs, BMRC Access Pass or non-recovery casual passes. If you would like it included you are welcome to upgrade to Friends of Red Shed or a weekly Red Shedder membership.

The towel locker code changes periodically and we’ll let members know when it does, please don’t share it.

Can I use a locker?

Red Shed lockers are free to use for your session, up to 3 hours at a time. If you’d like to leave gear here between visits, permanent lockers are available to rent at $50 for 3 months.

When do I get my Red Shedder T-shirt?

Once a year, as part of your membership. We’ll let you know when they’re ready and how to collect yours.

Other ways in

What is the Starter Pack?

The Starter Pack is 3 sessions for $30, valid 30 days, across rowing, gym or recovery. It’s a taste of Red Shedder membership life, not a program.

Do you offer a free trial?

We don’t run a free trial. The Starter Pack, 3 sessions for $30 valid 30 days, is the way to try Red Shed across rowing, the gym or recovery.

Do I have to hold a membership to visit?

No. Casual visits and 10-packs are available, and Easy Oar Cafe, Resets and community events are open to everyone. See casual visits & 10-packs.

What is Friends of Red Shed?

Friends of Red Shed is an annual membership for people who want to be part of Red Shed without regularly training here. It covers access through the main doors, the ensuites and change rooms, towel service, Monday Resets and a Friends of Red Shed polo. You’ll need a fob, which is a $50 refundable deposit. See Friends of Red Shed.

If you’d like to use the gym, rowing or recovery, a Red Shedder membership is what you’re after.

How do I race competitively?

Whilst Red Shed Inc is an affiliated rowing club, it doesn’t enter crews at regattas other than our own Golden Oar. All other racing happens through other clubs. Black Mountain Rowing Club is affiliated with Red Shed and operates out of our shed, and it’s where most (but not all) of our rowers go when they want to race.

To enquire about BMRC membership, talk to the coaches at Red Shed or contact BMRC via their website: Black Mountain Rowing Club.

Since BMRC members also row out of Red Shed, BMRC members who need access to the Red Shed facility will need a BMRC Access Pass at Red Shed. This requires a Mindbody account. Whilst it doesn’t cost anything on top of your BMRC annual membership, you will need a fob, which is a $50 refundable deposit. It covers the main doors, the locker and boat bay doors, the six ensuites and three other toilets, and use of the Red Shed lockers for your session.

BMRC access doesn’t include towel service, permanent lockers, Resets, the gym, Red Shed rowing programs or classes, or recovery. If you’d like any of those alongside your racing, Friends of Red Shed or a Red Shedder membership will cover them.

Not sure where to start? Email info@redshed.org.au and we’ll point you the right way.

Booking & sessions

How do I book?

Everything is booked through Mindbody, including rowing, gym and recovery sessions and our programs. Set yourself up once and book whatever suits your week. Step by step help, including child profiles, waitlists and cancellations, is on our booking help page.

Do I need to book, or can I just turn up?

Book. Every coached rowing session, gym class and recovery session is booked in Mindbody and places are capped, so book ahead rather than turning up. Using the showers and facilities does not need a booking.

How do I book a rowing session on the Starter Pack?

Rowing on the Starter Pack requires prior rowing experience or a completed Learn to Row. If you’re brand new to rowing, start with Learn to Row first.

I’m not a rower. Can I still join?

Absolutely. Plenty of Red Shedders come for the gym, recovery and community and never pick up an oar, and Learn to Row runs all year if you’d like to try.

Why won’t the door open?

Your fob is linked to your bookings rather than being a general key, so the door only opens when you have a session booked. No booking, no entry, even if you’re a member and the building is open.

If you’re last minute and there’s space, you can book in the app as you arrive. Allow about two minutes between booking and the door opening.

Our system also picks up tailgating and adds a pass to the account of anyone who comes in without tapping, so please tap in yourself even if you’re arriving with someone else.

How do I get a fob?

Reception can organise one for you, with a $50 refundable deposit. Anyone with a membership, pass or pack can have one.

Do sessions run on public holidays?

Most sessions at Red Shed, including Red Shed Resets, are cancelled on public holidays. On occasion we do run a rowing or gym session. This is usually when it is part of a short program with a limited timeframe, or where one of our team has volunteered to run it just for fun, and those are for community and technique help rather than a regular coached session. Recovery is unstaffed, so you can always book it. Just book ahead in the app so your fob lets you in. Easy Oar Cafe is open on some public holidays too, so check @easyoarcafe for the most up to date details.

Facility & hours

What are the opening hours?

The Red Shed facility is open to Red Shedders 5am to 8pm daily. Rowing and gym sessions run per the Mindbody timetable. Showers and facilities are available 5am to 8pm daily with no booking needed, for Red Shedders and booked visitors only, not for general public use. Recovery runs 5am to 8pm daily with a booking. Casual recovery visits (no fob) are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Easy Oar Cafe is 7am to 2pm daily and open to everyone. Full guide.

What is fob access?

Anyone with a membership, pass or pack can get a fob, for a $50 refundable deposit. With a fob you can come in any time 5am to 8pm daily, and what it opens follows your membership. Without a fob, come in while we are open. If you are booked into a session or program, your coach will let you in.

Where are you, and is there parking?

45 John Cardiff Close, Acton ACT 2601, on Black Mountain Peninsula. Free parking is available. The peninsula gate closes, so please leave before closing time.

Can I bring my dog?

No, sorry. Red Shed sits on Black Mountain Peninsula, which is a dog free area, so we aren’t able to allow dogs anywhere on site, including Easy Oar Cafe and the balcony. Assistance animals are always welcome.

Can I ride my bike to Red Shed?

Please do. There are bike racks at the front of the building. Bikes can’t come inside, but there’s also a smaller rack down near the water, in view of the cafe balcony, if you’d rather keep an eye on yours while you’re here.

Is Red Shed accessible?

Yes. Red Shed is step free throughout, with ramp access and an automatic door straight into Easy Oar Cafe. A wheelchair sized lift runs down to the change rooms, where there’s a full size accessible toilet and shower. There are two accessible parking spaces at the front of the building.

The recovery space is tight for manoeuvring, so give us a call before you book and we’ll talk you through it.

Do you offer adaptive or accessible rowing?

It’s something we’re building. We have some adaptive equipment, though the range is still small at the moment, and accessible rowing programs are actively in the works. If you’re interested, email rowing@redshed.org.au and we’ll talk through what’s possible, knowing what people are after helps us shape what we build next.

Can I hire a room for a meeting?

Yes. Our meeting room is available weekdays, 9am to 5pm, by the hour, half day or full day, and you can book it online. For anything outside those hours, email info@redshed.org.au and we’ll see what we can do. Easy Oar Cafe can look after catering. Rates and availability are on our meeting room page.

Rowing programs

What programs do you run?

Coaching is provided for every Red Shed program. Options run from Learn to Row through to high performance, plus youth, school holiday, social, corporate and tourism rowing. See Row.

Which program is right for me?

If you’re new, start with Learn to Row. From there, Continue to Row helps you keep going, and performance programs are there when you want to push further. Not sure? Email info@redshed.org.au.

Can I train at Red Shed if I row for another club?

Yes, and you don’t have to leave your club to do it. Our coaching and programs are open to rowers from any club. Train here, race in your own colours. Red Shed Inc doesn’t enter crews at regattas other than our own Golden Oar, so there’s no conflict to manage.

We are also home to Black Mountain Rowing Club, which is an option if you’re after a racing club, but not essential to join.

You’ll need a Red Shed membership, pass or pack to book sessions, same as anyone else. Boat storage isn’t something we offer, so your boat stays at your own club. Not sure what fits? Email rowing@redshed.org.au.

Can my club come here for a camp?

Yes. Interstate crews travel here for camps of anywhere from one to seven days, individually or as a full crew, using our coaches and our facility. Email rowing@redshed.org.au and we’ll put something together.

What should I expect from Learn to Row?

Feeling nervous about it is normal, most people are. Our Learn to Row guide covers what to wear, what actually happens in a session and where rowing takes you next, and it answers most of what people ask us before they book.

How old do you have to be to row?

Adult rowing programs are 18 and over. Youth rowing goes by school year rather than age, so anyone from year 7 to year 12 can join, whatever age that makes you. Masters rowing officially starts at 27 and runs in age bands from there, so plenty of masters rowers are nowhere near retirement. The masters-specific courses we run from time to time tend to be pitched at 50 and over.

For younger children we offer a limited number of private sessions. That one comes down to height as much as age, so they can fit the boat properly. We are also looking at intro to row programs in future school holidays, using the ergs and other parts of Red Shed.

If someone sits just outside one of these, email info@redshed.org.au and we will talk it through.

Do you offer private coaching?

Yes. Private rowing coaching runs by appointment, 90 minutes a session, and it suits everyone from beginner to advanced, solo or as a crew of up to eight. Prices start at $150 and depend on the coach, the boat, the number of people and when you row. Peak times and weekends may be priced differently. Use our boats, or bring your own if you want coaching in the boat you regularly row in. If you need to store a boat with us, ask first. Email privates@redshed.org.au first so we can match you with the right coach and time. See Private Coaching.

Can I store my boat at Red Shed?

No. We do not offer permanent storage for private boats, kayaks or paddleboards. Black Mountain Rowing Club operates out of Red Shed and also out of their original shed a couple of hundred metres away, where they have a limited amount of storage. They are the people to ask about racking, so get in touch with BMRC directly.

If you are coming for private coaching and need somewhere for your boat during your visit, that is a separate thing. Contact us first.

Gym programs

Is RSX Strength Club the same as the gym?

Yes. RSX Strength Club is the name of our gym at Red Shed. Everything gym related sits under it, from coached classes and strength programming to Masters Strength and Youth Strength.

How old do you have to be to use the gym?

RSX Strength Club is 16 and over, though the sessions are pitched at adults. Red Shed Resets are also 16 and over. Younger athletes train in Youth Strength (Years 9-12), which runs with a coach.

Youth Strength (Years 5-8) is coming soon. To hear when it opens, email rsx@redshed.org.au and we will register your interest.

Do I need an induction before I use the gym?

It is not compulsory, but we recommend starting with a Welcome Session. It is on the timetable, it runs you through the equipment and how our sessions work, and it makes the first few weeks much easier. Book it in Mindbody.

Easy Oar Cafe

Do you take bookings at the cafe?

Not yet taking bookings. Walk-ins welcome. Easy Oar Cafe is open 7am to 2pm daily and open to everyone, not just Red Shedders.

Can you cater for allergies and dietary requirements?

Please inform us if you have a food allergy. Tell the team before you order and they will confirm what can be accommodated. The menu marks nut free, gluten free, egg free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan options, though modifications may not be available for all menu items.

Support & community

How can I support Red Shed?

Red Shed is a not-for-profit built to make rowing, movement and wellbeing possible for everyone, and it exists thanks to private donations. Donations are fully tax deductible through the Australian Sports Foundation. For donations, sponsorship or partnership, email info@redshed.org.au. Support Red Shed.

Can I volunteer?

Yes, and we’d love the help. From events to Golden Oar to rowing programs, there’s a role for you. Volunteer.
